This past Labor Day, Jessica's side of the family got together for a reunion at Payette Lake in McCall Idaho.  As a project for the weekend, we decided to launch helium balloons with notes attached in an attempt to see where they land.  We launched 100 balloons over the coarse of the weekend.  Some were 24 inches in diameter, some 17 and some 13.  We rented a fairly large tank of helium from the local gas supply store.  As of 10/6/05 we have only had one of them found.  It was found by a person hunting 15 north of Butte, Montana.  That gives our balloon a total distance traveled of 194 miles.  His E-mail read as follows:

Found one of your balloons and remnants of two others at Elk Park approx 15 miles north of Butte, Mt.  The number on the tag was 77.  I could not tell if the balloons were tied together or not.  They weren't where we saw the remnants.  Of the three balloons one was yellow one was a mylar or chrome color and then the one we found.  The balloon was basically destroyed and found the tag on the string.  We were hunting and walking on the ridge in the mountains to the west of the highway on your map.  The tag itself was in excellent condition and was found on the ground.

This balloon was launched by Taylor so it appears that she is the big winner.  Sorry there was no prize.  As hunting seasons continue throughout the fall, hopefully we will get another balloon or two returned.  Below is a map of where the balloon traveled:

Below is a picture of where it was found.  He stated he was walking a ridge to the West of the marker.

Below is a list of all the Balloons we launched.  Unfortunately no records were kept of the balloon that was found.  Not sure what size it was or how it was filled.  Next reunion we will take care of all that stuff.  These were placed here as a special request for Virginia.

Theses last 10 balloons were launched by me (Greg Briggs) after I got home from the reunion.  There was a little helim left in the tank and I just wnated to use it up.  All these balloons were launched at my house in downtown Boise and all were small balloons.
